Jeep Grand Cherokee L Off-Road Review

One thing that Jeep noticeably lacked over the last decade was a prominent seven-passenger SUV. This is surprising coming from an all-SUV manufacturer – but Jeep may finally have a suitable solution – the Grand Cherokee L. The L delivers additional length compared to brand-mates the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer – both two-row vehicles – allowing you to pick up an extra passenger or two in addition to their equipment. The Grand Cherokee L gives you all the space you need for a cross-country trek – but how does it fare off-road?

Performance Specs

So, what are the off-road capabilities of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L? First, you should know this Jeep comes in six different trim levels. All of them (except for the Summit Reserve) come with RWD standard and 4WD as an option. The lower trims (Laredo and Limited) include the single-speed transfer case (Quadra-Trac 1) while the Overland Summit and Summit Reserves have a low-range transfer case in addition to Hill-descent Control. This has been a staple characteristic of the Quadra-Trac II, making it a menace when it comes to off-road capability.

Memphis and Southaven, MS drivers have two powertrain options. First, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 is your standard – delivering 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Not too bad for a base engine. But when you want real off-road capability, opt for the 5.7-liter Hemi V8. This monster yields 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque for the ultimate off-road experience. You’ll work with an 8-speed transmission regardless of your selection.

Towing Off-Road Capabilities of the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

If you’re going off-road outside of Collierville, of course, you’re going to want substantial towing capability in case you get stuck or need to help someone else free their vehicle. This requires the 5.7-liter version of the Grand Cherokee L. With this upgraded engine, you’ll have no problem towing a maximum of 7,200 pounds.

Driving Dynamics

Another area the Grand Cherokee L sticks out is through the Quadra-Lift air suspension. This can give you an additional ground clearance of up to 10.9 inches, which you’ll need when you’re on an off-road adventure.

Even on the most treacherous turns in the steepest mountains, the L still feels composed with additional length and weight. Not only can you off-road, but you’ll off-road with total control.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L Off-Road Review: The Bottom Line

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is nothing to shake a stick at – especially the 5.7-liter engine package. If you’re dead set on using it for 4×4 adventures, we highly recommend the upgraded L.
